Well, we made the decision as a family to try something new. I’ve often given myself a hard time for making drastic school changes, questioning our decisions, labeling myself somewhat of a confetti canon of ideas and spontaneity…until someone I very much respect applauded me on the ability to pivot and adapt. There is beauty in knowing where your children will thrive and what they need in the season they are in.
This summer, we decided to put Dixie back in public school, albeit slightly against her wishes. I won’t bore you with the details, but just two weeks before school started, a job listing opened up, I applied and quickly was offered a full time position as the attendance secretary! This all happened while Johnny was away, building orphanages in Africa! Don’t worry, I kept him in the loop the whole time and we discussed it. I’m not THAT spontaneous!
My shy girl was delighted! The nerves of going to a new school, new kids, new everything has been really stressful for her. The reaction of her to finding out I’d be on campus was pure joy, and relief. Since school has started, we’ve been finding our new rhythm as a family. I’ve been a stay at home mom for mostly 18 years, one of the reasons I was hired…multi tasking/spinning plates!
I’m not going to say it’s been easy because it has not been. Middle school is hard dude, especially when you’ve primarily homeschool (which I am still a big fan of btw). Hudson and Boone are doing independent study at home. Hudson’s a sophomore and taking classes at the local community college, Boone is a senior and working 3 job! Lincoln is full time staff with YWAM/Emerge and has officially moved out of the nest.
This is a season of growth for us all. But we can do hard things! Crosby on the other hand had been BEGGING to join his neighborhood friends and ride the bus to our local elementary school. The kid is thriving. If you know him, his personality fits there. I just can’t wait for his first parent/teacher conference and all the stories we’ll hear. 😂
I can’t say for certain this will be a permanent change, but after a lot of prayer and reflection, we’ve felt it’s necessary for the season we are in.
